Expendables-3-Cast-BannerTitle:  The Expendables 3
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Director: Patrick Hughes
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Staham, Kellan Lutz
Runtime: 1 hr 43 mins

What It Is: Barney Ross and his band of misfit mercs are back and this time they’re not only freeing up an old member of the titular unit they’re doing so in the grandest fashion possible. I won’t spoil whats happens (we don’t do that here), what we will do however is try to break down this basic action movie trope-fest. After Sly and company do whatever it is they were doing at the beginning “Doc” (Wesley Snipes) just begins to fit right on in with our group despite being held captive for over eight years. From there we get a thinly veiled revenge/action movie plot with a few new younger members including Smilee( Lutz) and Luna (Ronda Rousey) among others. I won’t say too much more about what it is because if you’ve seen either of the previous two films then you kind of know whats going on with the plot.

What We Think: There are way too many easy coincidences. In one of the first scene we meet Smilee he’s seen on a motorcycle, and inexplicably a military force that has automatic weapons and freaking tanks as well as helicopters and thousands of men need MOTORCYCLES? Suspension of disbelief can only go so far before that turns to lampoon. And while its a “fun” trip to the cinema it is nothing more then meh, at least it isn’t boring and there’s enough explosion and craziness for the average viewer to be happy. However smarter patrons will scoff at the unfunny quipps.

Our Grade: C-, It’s fun so that makes this film far from a failure. The over-abundance of unbearable coincidences just made my head hurt. Whether it was the ridiculous and over the top stunts, or cheesy dialogue everything about this film was hit or miss. Unfortunately for it, the misses outweighed the hits here. This is one you should skip unless you really like the previous two Expendables films which I  really didn’t perhaps I’m not the target audience here, or perhaps I like my modern action films with less nostalgia and a little more substance.
