What the Heck is It?: Revolving around pioneering punk band Bikini Kill this documentary shows the “riot grrrl” movement in the early years of the 1990’s. From it we learn just how much influence Bikini Kill, and later Le Tigre singer Kathleen Hanna truly had in making punk rock no longer just a game for the boys to play. With interviews from the legendary Joan Jett as well as other iconic woman of punk this is a poignant doc that even people who aren’t fans of the subject are going to like…but let’s be honest ho doesn’t like punk!

Title: Amelie

Whose In It?: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Serge Merlin
What the Heck is It?: Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, and the highest grossing French film in American Cinema history if you haven’t seen this film the only thing left to say is…why not? It’s a film that’ll leave you grinning from ear to ear pretty much from it’s wonderful opening credits. 33 million dollars…on a 10 mil budget? For a french film Miramax finds that c’est manifique. And we think you’ll find the film merveilleux! From Audrey Tautou’s whimsical performance as a girl finding love, while also trying to help everyone she comes in contact with. It’s a layered tale shot beautifully, and makes Paris look and feel like a place to fall in love!

Title: Mr. Nobody
Year: 2009
Whose In It?: Jared Leto, Sarah Polley, Diana Kruger
What the Heck is It?: Jared Leto’s last film before his Oscar turn in Dallas Buyer’s Club. It had been in developmental hell since 2009 only recently releasing in September. Unlike Amelie we’re pretty sure no one saw this movie in theatres as it grossed a whopping $3,600 domestically, and only 2.3 million worldwide (that’s over the four year span since the film opened in Europe in 2009) long delays don’t seem to deter the ambition of this film as Leto plays Nemo a man whose awaken in the year 2092, at the age of 120, and as the last mortal in a world where no one can die. The film focuses on three specific periods in Nemo’s story, and what we get is a fantastic voyage

Title: The Road
Year: 2009
Whose In It?: Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Kodi Smith-McPhee
What the Heck is It?: Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy who also wrote the novel turned into Oscar-winning flick No Country for Old Men. Viggo Mortensen plays a man (named Man) and his son Boy (Smith-McPhee) try to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. With only a pistol and a shopping cart these this father and son must fight off both cannibals and mother nature as the grey snow covers all in it’s path.

Title: Mary & Max
Year: 2009
Whose In It?: Toni Collette, Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Eric Bana
What the Heck is It?: The stop motion tale of a loner 8 year old Australian girl named Mary who strikes up a pen pal relationship with a 40-year old New Yorker named Max Horowitz, max has Asperger’s. They talk about a variety of things one would in the 1970’s, and thus begins their twenty year correspondence. It’s a beautifully filmed stop motion masterpiece with unique cinematography. You see theres only one color used atop the monochrome styling and thats red.
