Phoenix’s Snob Suggests: 12 Angry Men

Film Snob Reviews is run by two people. One of us, Phoenix. The other, William. We can both have the same taste in films, but then again, we both have found our differing opinions and have accepted eachothers’ “guilty pleasure films.” This will be our chance to give you a suggestion. Need a movie to rent this weekend? A movie night with some friends? A comfort movie after a breakup because she cheated on you? No matter what the reason may be, these are all films that come from OUR suggestion boxes. Whether you watch them or not is up to you. Whether you like them or not, is something we won’t generally criticize, to each his own.

These are our Snob Suggestions

Title: 12 Angry Men
Director: Sidney Lumet
Year: 1957
Starring: Henry Fonda
MPAA Rating: PG

Phoenix says: 12 men, one of them swimming against the current, that is basically the premise of Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men. The cast, headed by the uncomparable, Henry Fonda, takes us into a room of 12 jurors, set to decide the fate of one boy, suspected of killing his father. The jurors must now unanimously decide whether or not the evidence given in the case, is good enough to send him to prison. One “not guilty” vote of the bunch doesn’t work, everyone has to agree. Fonda plays Juror #8, who decides that the young man deserves a fair deliberation. And in doing so, he is able to convince another juror that the boy isn’t guilty of the crime. The last film you may have seen of Sidney Lumet’s was Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, with Philip Seymour Hoffman & Ethan Hawke. It’s not the same style, there are only 12 members of this cast, and that’s it. 12 Men in a room, fighting and learning more about eachother by the second. As a fan of older movies, this has to be one of my favorites, easily! It’s well directed, fantastically acted and the characters mesh so well together. 12 people arguing in a room may not seem like much at first, but the compellingness of the arguments and the height in which it is taken to, is what draws you in.
